I park in a spot
At the grocery store lot.
Turn off the engine, open the door…
But come to full stop, cannot exit the car.
Glued to the seat,
My heart sounds, “retreat!”
As I sense the
All-too-familiar defeat.
The door, open wide;
My thoughts turn back
To the times we would shop
For our dinners, our snacks.
We made it a game.
How fast could we finish?
He’d race to the deli,
And I to the spinach.
These thoughts don’t bring comfort.
Right now they cause pain.
So I start the car, head home
To eat cereal tonight
Again.
